Washington DC Gas Edges Up to $4.24; Diesel Climbs to $5.61

Washington, DC regular gasoline and diesel prices both rose in AAA’s August 1 check, with diesel posting the sharper daily increase. The Washington (DC only) average was $4.243 per gallon for regular gas and $5.612 for diesel.

Regular gasoline rose 0.3 cents from the previous day. Diesel rose 3.4 cents, a much larger daily move. Compared with AAA’s July 30 check, regular gas was up 0.6 cents and diesel was up 2.5 cents.

Regular gas remains above $4.24

AAA listed Washington, DC regular gasoline at $4.243 per gallon on August 1. That was 1.0 cent higher than a week earlier and 13.8 cents higher than a month earlier.

The year-over-year difference was larger: regular gas was 91.5 cents more expensive than in AAA’s year-ago comparison. For a driver filling a 15-gallon tank, the current average works out to about $63.65 before station-specific price differences.

The figure comes from the Washington (DC only) row, not the broader Washington metro average. Individual stations may be higher or lower than the area average.

Diesel’s daily increase was steeper

Diesel averaged $5.612 per gallon in Washington, DC. The price increased 3.4 cents from the previous day, 1.2 cents from a week earlier, and 4.6 cents from a month earlier.

Diesel was also $1.791 per gallon higher than a year ago. That difference can matter directly to commercial vehicles, delivery fleets, contractors, repair companies, service businesses and other operations that use diesel-powered trucks or equipment.

What higher prices could mean locally

The latest movement does not document a specific reaction from Washington households or businesses, but it adds to fuel costs that commuters and families can watch in their weekly budgets. Households taking weekend trips may also need to allow more for gasoline.

For contractors, delivery drivers, landscapers, repair companies and other mobile businesses, diesel and gasoline costs can add to operating expenses across multiple vehicles. Those costs could affect future delivery charges, service pricing or route planning, although AAA’s price data does not show whether any particular local business has made such changes.

Drivers comparing stations may reduce the effect of an area-wide increase because pump prices vary from location to location. Checking prices before filling up can be especially useful for larger vehicles and commercial fleets.

Broader market prices also moved higher

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s July 28 weekly release showed regular gasoline at $4.096 nationally for the week of July 27. The East Coast average was $3.997, while the Central Atlantic region reached $4.174. EIA also listed diesel at $5.313 nationally, $5.354 across the East Coast and $5.579 in the Central Atlantic region.

Those figures provide broader context, but they are weekly regional measurements rather than an August 1 Washington price. In its July 30 market update, AAA said crude oil prices remained in the $80-per-barrel range and that higher crude prices could delay the seasonal relief that often arrives as summer travel winds down. That context does not establish a specific cause for Washington’s latest daily increase.
