Sewage Line Restored, Airport Disruption and Spirit Loss Lead DC Headlines
It was a busy weekend across the District, with infrastructure repairs, travel disruptions and sports action all making headlines.
Potomac Sewage Line Back in Service
The massive sewer pipe that ruptured in January and sent millions of gallons of untreated waste into the Potomac River is now back in operation. DC Water announced Saturday that emergency repairs are complete and the 72-inch interceptor has resumed carrying full flow.
The break triggered an emergency declaration last month and raised concerns about bacteria levels in the river. While drinking water was not impacted, recreational use along parts of the Potomac has been closely monitored. Officials say environmental testing and long-term system checks will continue in the weeks ahead.
Regional Airports Briefly Grounded
Travelers across the D.C. area faced unexpected delays Friday after a hazardous materials incident at the Potomac TRACON facility in Warrenton, Virginia. The site manages air traffic for Reagan National, Dulles and BWI airports.
Flights were temporarily halted as a precaution, creating ripple effects across the region before operations gradually resumed. By the weekend, normal traffic patterns were largely restored, though some passengers reported lingering delays.
Spirit Drop Home Match
On the sports front, the Washington Spirit fell 1-0 to the Portland Thorns on Saturday in regular season play. The tightly contested match slipped away on a single goal, keeping the Spirit searching for early-season momentum.
The team remains in the mix as the NWSL schedule ramps up, with fans looking ahead to the next home fixture for a rebound performance.
