Rail Study Puts Reno-to-TRIC Commuter Line Back in Spotlight

Interest is picking up around a proposed passenger rail line connecting downtown Reno to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.

Study Finds Project Feasible

A recent public discussion of the Regional Transportation Commission’s rail study outlines a potential route using existing freight tracks between the Amtrak station and USA Parkway. Transit officials say the study found the concept to be feasible, with phased construction options.

The short-term phase is estimated at roughly $175 million and would establish starter service. A longer-term buildout, which could approach $1 billion, would expand capacity and infrastructure.

Funding and Regional Partners

RTC leaders have indicated the project would rely on a mix of federal and state grants, along with private investment. Major employers at the industrial center, including large advanced manufacturing companies, have reportedly supported early planning efforts.

Construction is expected to be coordinated with already approved improvements along the I-80 corridor, a move intended to reduce overlapping disruptions and control costs.

Why It Matters

The Tahoe Reno Industrial Center continues to draw thousands of daily commuters from Washoe County. Traffic backups along I-80 and USA Parkway remain a persistent complaint, particularly during peak shifts and weather events.

A rail connection could ease roadway congestion, reduce travel times, and provide an alternative for workers who currently rely almost entirely on personal vehicles. At the same time, questions remain about engineering constraints, long-term operating costs, and how stations would integrate with local transit.

For now, the study is moving through final review. Any next steps would require formal board action and a clear funding path.
