Fontana Planning Commission to weigh grocery-store center at Sierra and Terra Vista

Fontana’s Planning Commission is scheduled to hear a June 2 proposal for a grocery-anchored retail project at Sierra Avenue and Terra Vista Drive. The item is on the city’s official agenda, but it is still a hearing item, not a final approval.

The request would change part of the Arboretum Specific Plan from Residential Planned Community to General Commercial. The packet describes a 69,617-square-foot retail center with a 49,362-square-foot grocery store, inline shops, a pad building, and a drive-thru restaurant.

The package also includes an off-site alcohol permit tied to the grocery store. That matters because it is part of the grocery component, not a separate standalone approval.

What happens next

City staff is recommending that the Planning Commission forward the item to the City Council. If commissioners do so, council review would be the next major step.

For nearby residents and businesses, the main questions are how the land-use change could affect traffic, shopping access, and the long-term character of the Sierra and Terra Vista corridor. The important point is that the project has not been approved yet.
