Stamper Road closed after storm damage; City says reopening TBD

A portion of Stamper Road in Fayetteville is closed between Rogers Drive and Lyon Road after storm-related damage beneath the roadway, the City announced on July 24.

City officials said heavy rainfall damaged the downstream embankment, headwall and culvert system. An initial inspection found the culvert separated, creating a void beneath part of the northbound lane. Crews are working with engineers to assess the damage, and barricades are in place.

The road will remain closed until repairs are completed and the area is safe for travel, and a reopening date has not been set.

Separately, NCDOT has been managing traffic around a major Fayetteville corridor with a detour for Raeford Road near Ireland Drive.

In an NCDOT press release dated July 2, the agency said an approximately two-week detour would start July 13 after crews discovered an old culvert that had to be excavated before installing a new drainage pipe. NCDOT said both directions of Raeford Road near the McDonald’s at Ireland Drive would need to close for about two weeks, with detour signs directing traffic (especially commercial vehicles) onto Skibo Road and the All American Freeway.

The NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook for central North Carolina notes locally heavy rain and a marginal risk of minor flooding are possible today, with patchy dense fog possible early Sunday. It also says a few strong to severe storms are possible Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night.
