Sioux Falls road projects split between fall milestones and 2027 work

Sioux Falls is reaching the midpoint of its 2026 construction season, but the city’s roadwork does not have one common end date. Some projects are scheduled to reach substantial completion or other fall milestones, while several major corridor and interchange projects will continue into 2027.

The City of Sioux Falls’ July 22 construction update highlighted the fall-oriented work. Project schedules can change because of weather, construction progress and traffic-control needs, so a fall milestone should not be read as proof that every restoration or closeout task will be finished.

Projects with fall-oriented schedules

The 49th Street bridge over I-29 is scheduled to remain closed between Terry Avenue and Solberg Avenue through Oct. 23, 2026. The rehabilitation includes bridge-deck repairs, barrier and joint work, pavement improvements and pedestrian railing.

Drivers using 49th Street should continue planning alternate routes while the bridge closure remains in place. Oct. 23 is the scheduled date in the current project timeline; it is not confirmation that the closure has already ended or that every related activity will be complete by that date.

Additional interstate work is planned through the fall. The South Dakota Department of Transportation’s Sioux Falls metro-projects information lists I-229 ramp resurfacing and repairs, including scheduled August closures at Western Avenue and Rice Street. The ramp work is listed as extending into October.

Cliff Avenue and I-229 remain a long-term disruption

The Cliff Avenue-I-229 interchange project is scheduled to continue through June 25, 2027. Cliff Avenue is currently limited to one lane in each direction, and the northbound I-229 on- and off-ramps remain closed.

In its July 24 update, SDDOT said August work would include bridge-deck construction, concrete paving and work on the west half of Cliff Avenue. The agency also described a planned traffic shift onto newly constructed southbound lanes. That shift is anticipated work, not a completed change, and drivers should follow current signs and official updates.

Minnesota Avenue reconstruction continues into 2027

Minnesota Avenue from 2nd Street to 8th Street has one lane in each direction through the work zone. Side-street access is limited, and left turns are prohibited in the reconstruction area.

The project includes utility work and has a listed value of about $12.24 million. The city lists June 25, 2027, as the scheduled completion date. That makes Minnesota Avenue a longer-term construction route rather than a project expected to wrap up with the fall milestones.

I-29 and 85th Street is also a 2027 project

The I-29 and 85th Street interchange project is scheduled from November 2025 through November 2027. SDDOT says two lanes will be maintained in each direction on I-29 during peak hours, while access to businesses at 85th Street, Sundowner Avenue and Tall Grass Avenue will be maintained.

Residents and commuters should check current City of Sioux Falls and SDDOT construction updates before traveling. The key distinction for the rest of the season is that some bridge and ramp work has fall-oriented milestones, while the Minnesota Avenue, Cliff Avenue-I-229 and I-29-85th Street projects are scheduled to remain active well into 2027.
