Baring Boulevard closure changes traffic near Sparks Boulevard project
Drivers using Baring Boulevard near Sparks Boulevard should expect a temporary closure while crews reconstruct the intersection. The closure began Friday, July 24, and remains part of an active construction phase on Tuesday, July 28.
What is closed
Baring Boulevard is closed on both the east and west sides of the Sparks Boulevard intersection. Sparks Boulevard remains open to through traffic, but other lane restrictions and traffic controls remain along the corridor.
The Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County says signed detours are being used to maintain access to nearby neighborhoods and businesses. Drivers should follow posted routes, slow down, watch for changing traffic patterns and allow extra travel time.
The RTC project map identifies the first closure phase as July 24-28. That is a scheduled traffic-control window, not a guarantee that all work or related impacts will end after July 28. Construction schedules and traffic controls may change because of weather, equipment availability or other unforeseen conditions.
Why the intersection is being rebuilt
The work is part of the Sparks Boulevard Capacity Improvement Project, which extends from Greg Street to Baring Boulevard. The RTC project page says the project is intended to improve roadway capacity and safety while addressing mobility needs for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users.
The larger project includes widening Sparks Boulevard, reconstructing intersections, upgrading drainage, relocating utilities and adding or improving pedestrian and bicycle facilities. RTC lists construction as running from fall 2025 through summer 2027, with an estimated cost of about $86.5 million.
KOLO News reported that the project will add a lane in each direction between Interstate 80 and Baring Boulevard. The broader work also includes sidewalks, ADA ramps, improved crossings and other safety improvements. Those projected benefits are still ahead, so residents should expect work-zone restrictions before the corridor improvements are complete.
Other traffic controls remain in place
The RTC Weekly Traffic Control Report dated July 24 lists additional restrictions along Sparks Boulevard, including single-lane closures near Prater Way, Baring Boulevard, Shadow Lane and Interstate 80 during portions of the July 27-31 workweek.
The report also identifies a separate Howard Drive detour and separate work at the Sparks Boulevard and Ion Drive intersection. Those projects should not be confused with the Baring Boulevard closure, although they can add to changing traffic patterns in the area.
Residents, commuters and nearby businesses should check RTC traffic-control updates and the Sparks Boulevard project website before traveling through the corridor. Posted signs and current work-zone instructions should take priority over older directions or familiar routes.
