Houghton Lake Flats South Unit to Close Two Features During Repairs

Visitors to Houghton Lake Flats should expect temporary access changes this summer as the Michigan Department of Natural Resources rehabilitates aging water-control infrastructure in the 350-acre South Unit.

The project will temporarily close the South Unit gazebo and fishing platform during construction. The DNR expects the North Unit, the dikes and hand-launch boat access to remain available, although visitors should follow posted signs and any active construction restrictions.

Work will address dam, pump and dike problems

According to the DNR’s June 30 announcement, the project includes rehabilitation or replacement work involving the South Unit’s dam, pumphouse, pump system, underground pipes and dike infrastructure.

The work is needed because the pump system has failed and the dam no longer holds water safely or efficiently. Those problems have limited the ability to manage water levels in the wetland and maintain habitat conditions through the water-control system.

The project is intended primarily to restore reliable wetland-level and habitat management. It is not simply a visitor-amenity upgrade, although the construction will affect anglers and other people who use the South Unit.

Construction is expected to continue through fall

The DNR said construction is expected to begin during summer 2026 after water levels recede and continue through the fall. The agency has not announced a specific completion date in the project information reviewed for this article.

Up North Voice reported July 16 that the planned work will affect fishing and visitor access while the DNR repairs the infrastructure. The temporary closure of the gazebo and fishing platform applies to the construction area and does not mean all of Houghton Lake Flats will be closed.

What visitors should check before going

People planning to visit should expect conditions to change as work advances. The North Unit, dikes and hand-launched boats are expected to remain usable, but those areas may be subject to posted safety restrictions or temporary changes related to construction.

Houghton Lake is a census-designated place in Roscommon County, distinct from Houghton County and the city of Houghton. For local residents, anglers and visitors, the most immediate effect is the temporary loss of access to two South Unit features. The longer-term purpose is to restore the DNR’s ability to control water levels and manage wetland habitat more reliably.

Visitors should check current DNR notices and on-site signs before traveling to Houghton Lake Flats.
