Michigan DNR to rehabilitate Houghton Lake Flats wetland controls this summer
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is rehabilitating the South Unit dike system at Houghton Lake Flats during summer 2026, including repairs to a dam and restoration of water-level control in a 350-acre wetland.
The project is at the South Unit, just off U.S. 127 in Roscommon County near Houghton Lake. The DNR says the work is intended to restore its ability to manage water levels, improve wildlife habitat and support fishing and wildlife viewing at a site visible from the highway.
What the project addresses
The rehabilitation responds to problems with the South Unit’s water-control system. A water pump had failed, and the dam and dike system had deteriorated to the point that the dam could no longer safely and efficiently hold water, according to the DNR.
The system includes several miles of dikes and a dam. The dikes date to the 1960s, when they were built in connection with construction of U.S. 127. The planned work focuses on bringing those controls back into usable condition rather than announcing a new wetland or a newly created recreational area.
