West Hempstead School Bus Camera Agreement Extended Through June 2027

The Town of Hempstead has authorized an extension of the school-bus stop-arm camera agreement serving the West Hempstead Union Free School District, keeping the current arrangement scheduled through June 30, 2027.

The Town Board took the action at its July 7, 2026 meeting. The resolution says the previous agreement between the town, BusPatrol America LLC and the West Hempstead Union Free School District expired June 30, 2026. It identifies the renewal as an amendment to and renewal of the existing opt-in agreement, rather than a new program.

What the renewal covers

Under the agreement, BusPatrol is the contractor for school-bus photo-violation monitoring. The Town of Hempstead resolution describes systems used to record possible violations involving a school bus stop arm under New York’s school-bus camera enforcement law.

A separate West Hempstead Union Free School District business-meeting record dated May 5, 2026 describes approval of the same one-year amendment and renewal. That record lists the contract term as July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, and notes that any future renewal would require additional board action.

For West Hempstead families and drivers, the practical takeaway is that the district’s existing BusPatrol agreement is scheduled to continue during the 2026-27 school year. The records reviewed do not establish that camera enforcement is active on every West Hempstead school bus, route or stop.

CBS New York reported in January 2024 on a lawsuit brought by drivers challenging tickets issued under the town’s program. That earlier report is background only; it does not determine whether the West Hempstead renewal is lawful or how the current agreement will operate.
