Regular gasoline prices edged lower in the Birmingham metro on Friday, July 31, while diesel moved higher, according to AAA’s latest local price check. The contrasting movements offer commuters limited short-term relief while diesel-dependent businesses continue to face elevated costs.
AAA listed Birmingham’s average regular gasoline price at $3.747 per gallon, down 0.7 cents from Thursday’s $3.754. The metro average was also 2.7 cents below the previous week’s $3.774.
That improvement remains limited in the longer view. Birmingham’s regular gasoline average was 27.1 cents higher than a month earlier, when AAA listed it at $3.476, and 96.0 cents above the year-ago average of $2.787.
Diesel moved in the opposite direction
Diesel averaged $5.161 per gallon in the Birmingham metro on July 31. That was 0.2 cents higher than Thursday’s $5.159 and 7.6 cents above the previous week’s $5.085.
The monthly and yearly comparisons were steeper. Diesel was 55.1 cents higher than the $4.610 average listed a month earlier and $1.646 above the year-ago average of $3.515. The latest Birmingham diesel average also remained above the $5-per-gallon mark.
Why the split matters locally
For most household drivers, a change of less than a cent per gallon from one day to the next will not substantially alter a single fill-up. The weekly decline in regular gasoline may provide modest relief for commuters, families and weekend travelers, but individual stations can vary from the metro average.
Diesel costs have broader operating implications. Delivery companies, contractors, landscapers, farmers, truckers, restaurants and service businesses often account for fuel in transportation charges, delivery fees or other prices. A diesel average above $5 can therefore affect more than drivers of diesel-powered vehicles.
