UAB, based in Birmingham, joined the Association of American Universities on Oct. 29, making it Alabama’s first and only member institution in the research association.
Georgetown University joined alongside UAB, bringing the AAU to 73 universities: 71 in the United States and two in Canada. The AAU says membership is based on quantitative indicators of research and education. UAB says the association last added members in 2023.
UAB reports annual research expenditures of more than $915 million, compared with $379 million in 2013, when Ray L. Watts became president. At that reported level, spending is more than 2.4 times its 2013 figure—an increase of more than $536 million. UAB also reports more than 37,000 employees across the university and Health System, which includes 15 hospitals, and more than 180 degree programs.
For Birmingham residents, what changes immediately? The announcements do not quantify an immediate effect on local services, funding, hiring or enrollment.
