Decatur Gas and Diesel Prices Rise; Diesel Up 31 Cents in a Week

Regular gasoline and diesel prices both rose in the Decatur area, but diesel moved sharply higher over the past week, according to AAA’s price check dated July 31, 2026. AAA listed the Decatur metro average at $4.283 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.205 for diesel.
Regular gasoline rises more gradually
The Decatur metro regular-gas average was up 2.6 cents from the previous day and 4.4 cents from a week earlier. Compared with the same period last year, the average was $1.035 per gallon higher.
Diesel is up 30.8 cents in a week
AAA listed the Decatur metro diesel average at $5.205 per gallon, up 9.2 cents from the previous day and 30.8 cents from the previous week.
Diesel was also $1.555 per gallon higher than a year earlier. The sharper short-term increase can add cost pressure for farmers, contractors, delivery operators, service businesses and other operations that use diesel-powered trucks or equipment. It may also work through transportation, deliveries and local services, although the available price data does not identify a specific cause for the latest increase.
Local pumps may be higher or lower
AAA’s figures are Decatur metro averages, not guaranteed prices at every station in the city. A July 31 snapshot for the Sam’s Club station at 4334 N. Prospect St. listed regular gasoline at $3.99 per gallon and diesel at $5.20.
That station-level comparison shows why drivers may see a different price at the pump. Prices can vary by location, competition, membership pricing and other local factors. The Sam’s Club figures are not a citywide average.
Decatur’s local fuel tax
The City of Decatur applies a local motor-fuel tax of 5 cents per gallon to non-diesel fuel and diesel fuel sold at retail or purchased in bulk. The tax took effect April 1, 2026.
That local charge is part of the price drivers pay in Decatur, but it should not be treated as the explanation for the broader daily, weekly or yearly market movement shown in AAA’s data.
For commuters and households, higher gasoline prices raise the cost of regular driving and weekend travel. Diesel-dependent operations may face greater near-term pressure because diesel has risen nearly 31 cents in one week.
