Tampa Gas Prices Ease Again, but Diesel Remains Far Above Last Month

Tampa Bay regular gasoline and diesel prices both declined from the previous check, but they are moving differently over the longer comparisons. Regular gasoline is easing faster, while diesel remains far above its month-ago and year-ago averages.

AAA’s latest price check, dated July 31, puts the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro average at $3.844 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.367 for diesel. These are metro averages, not the price at every station in Tampa, St. Petersburg or Clearwater.

Regular gas falls below last week’s average

The metro regular-gas average fell 2.9 cents from the previous day, when AAA listed it at $3.873. It is down 13 cents from the week-ago average of $3.974.

The shorter-term decline has not erased the longer price gap. Regular gasoline is still 3.9 cents above its month-ago average of $3.805 and 81.9 cents above the year-ago average of $3.025.

For Tampa-area commuters, that means a modest improvement compared with last week, but not a return to last year’s fuel costs. Households planning weekend travel may still see a noticeable difference in their budgets, especially when filling larger vehicles or making multiple trips.

Diesel dips overnight but remains much higher

Diesel also declined from the previous check, falling 2.4 cents from $5.391. Unlike regular gasoline, however, diesel is 7.4 cents higher than its week-ago average of $5.293.

The larger gaps appear in the monthly and annual comparisons. Tampa Bay diesel is 85.5 cents above the month-ago average of $4.512 and $1.725 above the year-ago average of $3.642.

That matters beyond the pump. Diesel is widely used by delivery operators, contractors, equipment operators, commercial fleets and other businesses that move goods or workers. Higher diesel costs can become another expense to monitor for service calls, construction work, restaurant supply runs and local deliveries. The figures do not document specific business reactions, but they show where commercial fuel pressure remains greatest.

Regional context

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly report released July 28 lists the Lower Atlantic regional average for the week of July 27 at $3.867 for regular gasoline and $5.255 for on-highway diesel.

The EIA figures provide regional weekly context rather than a current Tampa station price. The Tampa metro average was 2.3 cents below the Lower Atlantic regular-gas figure, while its diesel average was 11.2 cents higher. The measures use different geographic coverage and reporting schedules, so they should not be treated as a direct station-to-station comparison.

Station prices can vary across Tampa Bay

AAA’s metro figures are averages, not the price at every Tampa-area station. Individual pump prices can differ by location, brand, taxes, discounts, competition and the time of the update.
