Tampa Delays Rays Stadium Agreement Vote Until August

Tampa’s Community Redevelopment Agency board postponed consideration of a nonbinding memorandum of understanding with the Tampa Bay Rays on June 11, leaving the proposed stadium agreement unresolved rather than approving or rejecting it.

Tampa City Council members were acting as the CRA board when they moved the vote to August. The broader proposal involves Tampa, Hillsborough County and the Rays and covers a new ballpark and surrounding redevelopment. The delay leaves a local approval step unfinished as the parties continue working through the proposed arrangement.

The public-financing stakes are significant. The Associated Press reported in May that the memorandum described up to $967 million in combined tax support from local governments for the proposed ballpark. That figure is not identified as Tampa’s individual obligation, and the memorandum is not a final stadium contract.

The next known step is further CRA consideration in August. The City of Tampa’s CRA agenda records had not established a confirmed August meeting date or a final vote outcome by Aug. 10, 2026. Separate city and county approvals were expected as steps toward continuing the broader agreement, so Tampa’s position remains unsettled.
