Regular gas is flat for the day

AAA listed its New York regular-gas average at $4.230, unchanged from the previous day. The price was 2.5 cents lower than a week earlier, but it remained 21.5 cents higher than a month ago.

Compared with a year earlier, regular gas was up $1.035 per gallon. The statewide figure provides current price context for New York City drivers, but it is not a city-only station average. Prices can vary significantly from one neighborhood, borough and station to another.

Diesel rises again

Diesel was $5.866 per gallon in the same AAA New York statewide snapshot, up 0.5 cent from the previous day and 1.4 cents from a week earlier. It was 26 cents higher than a month ago.

The year-over-year increase was larger than gasoline’s. Diesel stood $1.719 above its level from a year earlier, making it a significant operating cost for delivery fleets, contractors, maintenance companies and other businesses that rely on diesel equipment or vehicles.

Gasoline and diesel are therefore moving in different directions over the short term. Regular gas is flat from the prior day and lower than last week, while diesel is increasing on both comparisons.

How the city reading compares

The latest weekly U.S. Energy Information Administration series for New York City listed regular gasoline at $4.114 for the week ending July 27. The release date was July 28.

That EIA figure should not be treated as a same-day comparison with the August 1 AAA snapshot. The two sources measure different geographies and time periods: EIA reports a weekly New York City reading, while AAA’s current figures are statewide New York averages.

What higher fuel costs can mean locally

For commuters, the immediate effect is a higher cost for household travel even as regular gas shows a slight weekly easing. Businesses using diesel may face more persistent pressure on delivery, construction, landscaping, repair and service work.
