New Orleans General De Gaulle Lane Closures Continue Through Monday
Temporary lane closures on eastbound General De Gaulle Drive between Georgia Street and Indiana Street on New Orleans’ West Bank will affect drivers through the weekend as Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project drainage work continues.
The two right eastbound lanes began closing at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2026. The work window is scheduled to continue no later than 6:00 a.m. Monday, August 3, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District.
What drivers should expect
The two right eastbound lanes are closing first. After that work, the two left eastbound lanes in the same General De Gaulle segment are also scheduled for temporary closure within the weekend work window.
The changing lane pattern will reduce eastbound capacity and could cause delays between Georgia and Indiana streets. Motorists should follow posted traffic controls, use caution and allow extra travel time.
Why the work is happening
The closures support ongoing drainage improvements under SELA, the federally funded Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project.
The Army Corps says the work will improve the area’s stormwater management system. SELA is intended to reduce the risk of damage from rainfall flooding; it does not guarantee that flooding will end.
The broader project includes drainage improvements in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes. In New Orleans’ West Bank, the current work is part of continuing construction along the General De Gaulle corridor.

The current closure schedule is expected to continue no later than 6:00 a.m. Monday, August 3. Until traffic controls change, eastbound drivers should obey posted signs and directions through the work zone.
