Morrison Road project update: DPW work under way, Summer 2027 target
The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) says work is under way on the Morrison Road (MayoโBullard) Improvement Project, a $23.6 million investment funded largely through the Federal Highway Administration (80%) and the Cityโs Bond Program (20%). DPW lists the project as In Construction and targets Summer 2027 for completion.
The projectโs scope varies by block but includes roadway pavement repairs, bridge improvements (including repairs to three bridges and replacement of two bridges on the eastbound side), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps. DPW also says the work includes a two-way, curb-protected greenway path along the eastbound side of the Morrison Canal, plus additional green space and high-visibility crosswalks at major intersections.
What DPW says the Morrison Road project includes
- Pavement repairs along Morrison Road
- Bridge work: repairs to three bridges and replacement of two bridges on the eastbound side
- ADA updates: installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps
- Bike/ped feature: a two-way, curb-protected greenway path along the eastbound side of the Morrison Canal
- Streetscape upgrades: additional neutral ground green space at Lake Willos Drive and Benson Street intersections
- Crosswalk upgrades: high-visibility crosswalks at major intersections
Two-week look ahead (what DPW says is planned next)
DPWโs Two-Week Look Ahead for active construction on the Morrison Road project covers the July 6โJuly 17, 2026 window and describes planned work that may affect lanes, parking, and access as crews switch between โhighโ and โlowโ lanes near the Morrison Canal.
Progress from the previous week (June 29โJuly 3, 2026):
- Westbound, low lane (Bullard AveโLacombe St): crews completed forming and pouring new concrete roadway panels on the north side of the Morrison Canal.
- Eastbound, high lane (Lacombe StโBullard Ave): crews completed removal of existing concrete pavement and installed a base course on the south side of the Morrison Canal.
- Eastbound (Mayo RdโRead Blvd): crews worked on the Citrus Approach Slabs and completed the concrete pour of the Sleeper Slabs.
- Westbound, low lane (Read BlvdโShaw Ave): DPW notes crews were scheduled to pour concrete roadway on that low-lane segment during the week.
Upcoming weekโs planned work (July 6โJuly 17, 2026):
- Westbound, high lane (Wright RdโBullard Ave): crews will continue removal of existing concrete pavement and installation of base course on the north side of the Morrison Canal.
- Westbound lane shift (Bullard AveโRead Blvd): crews will begin digging out the high lane and shift traffic into the low lane from Bullard Ave to Read Blvd.
- Eastbound, high lane (Lacombe StโWright Rd): crews will be pouring concrete from Lacombe St to Wright Rd (high lane).
- Eastbound, high lane (Wright RdโBullard Ave): crews will be pouring concrete from Wright Rd to Bullard Ave (high lane).
- Westbound, low lane (Read BlvdโVanderkloot Ave): crews will continue forming prior to pouring new concrete roadway on the north side of the Morrison Canal between Read Blvd and Vanderkloot Ave.
- Eastbound bridge-adjacent work (Mayo RdโRead Blvd): crews will continue working on Citrus Approach Slabs to prepare for concrete pours of approach slabs and perforated pipe headwalls, and will begin bridge repairs at the Lawrence Canal Bridge.
Commuter and business takeaways
- Expect lane configuration changes in the corridor segments DPW names for concrete work and lane shiftsโespecially around Bullard Ave to Read Blvd (where DPW describes shifting traffic into the low lane) and the Lacombe StโWright Rd / Wright RdโBullard Ave eastbound high-lane pours.
- Concrete work can mean changing conditions day to day. DPW cautions that schedules and timelines are subject to change, including due to inclement weather, equipment availability, or unforeseen site conditions.
- DPW says traffic control measures will be used in active work areas (including signage, fencing, and โNo Parking / Tow Away Zoneโ notifications) and that local access for residents, deliveries, and emergency services will be maintained at all times.
- For the next round of corridor-specific impacts, check DPWโs updated two-week look ahead rather than relying on last monthโs lane setup.
Context: an earlier eastbound closure phase
A Feb. 27, 2026 DPW traffic advisory described a phase that included an eastbound Morrison Road closure between Mayo Boulevard and Bundy Road, with detoured through traffic to the I-10 Service Road. That advisory said the initial phase was expected to last about a month and that construction impacts were anticipated to continue through July 2027โwhich lines up with DPWโs current, broader โSummer 2027โ completion target for the overall project.
For current, block-by-block conditions, DPWโs project page and two-week look-ahead document are the most direct sources for whatโs planned next along Morrison Road.
