New Orleans Gas Holds Near $3.68 While Diesel Tops $5

Regular gasoline and diesel moved in opposite directions in the latest New Orleans metro price check. The AAA figures, dated July 28, 2026, put regular gas at $3.678 per gallon and diesel at $5.007.

Regular gasoline was down 1.4 cents from the previous daily average. That small decline has not reversed the broader increase: the New Orleans metro regular-gas average was 10.6 cents higher than a week earlier, 19.8 cents higher than a month earlier and 90.1 cents above the same point last year.

Diesel moved higher

Diesel went the other direction, rising 3.7 cents from the previous daily check and moving above the $5-per-gallon mark. The latest diesel average was 19.1 cents higher than a week ago, 50.4 cents above the month-ago comparison and $1.631 higher than a year earlier.

For drivers, the split means the market cannot be described simply as rising or falling. Regular gas eased slightly from the prior check, while diesel continued to climb. The AAA figures are New Orleans metro averages, not prices at every station in the city or surrounding parishes, so individual pumps may be higher or lower.

What the difference means locally

For households and commuters, the regular-gas increase remains the more direct cost pressure at the pump. A vehicle that uses 15 gallons for a fill-up would cost about $1.59 more at the current metro average than it would at the week-ago average, before differences between stations are considered.

Diesel’s larger increase matters beyond individual truck stops. Delivery operators, contractors, landscapers, maintenance companies, restaurants that rely on delivered supplies and other diesel-dependent businesses may face higher operating costs when fuel remains above $5 per gallon. Those costs do not automatically translate into higher prices, but fuel is one expense businesses may have to watch closely.

A July 27 Stacker compilation using AAA data placed New Orleans at about $3.69 for regular gas and $4.97 for diesel. That provides a recent independent cross-check, while the newer AAA figures show regular gas slightly lower and diesel higher.
