Hialeah cancels firefighter bargaining session; next meeting set for Aug. 17

Hialeah canceled a scheduled July 30 bargaining session with International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1102 and posted Aug. 17 as the next publicly listed meeting, leaving the city’s firefighter contract talks unresolved as the current agreement approaches its scheduled Sept. 30 end date.

The negotiations are between the City of Hialeah and IAFF Local 1102, the exclusive bargaining representative for Hialeah firefighters. The public notices and agreement reviewed for this report do not identify a new contract, settlement or tentative agreement.

Next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 17

Hialeah’s cancellation notice says the July 30 negotiation meeting at City Hall was canceled and would be rescheduled. A later city notice lists the next session for Aug. 17, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. in the third-floor chambers of Hialeah City Hall, 501 Palm Ave.

The notice identifies the session as a public collective-bargaining meeting between the city and IAFF Local 1102 under Florida’s public-meeting requirements. It does not state why the July 30 meeting was canceled.

Agreement is scheduled to run through Sept. 30

The city’s 2025-2026 collective-bargaining agreement with IAFF Local 1102 is effective Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2026. The agreement covers wages, benefits, hours and working conditions for the represented firefighters.

The Aug. 17 session is therefore scheduled with less than two months remaining in the listed contract term. The city notice does not describe the meeting as a final negotiation, settlement, impasse declaration or contract decision.

Recent reporting raised pay and staffing concerns

Recent Miami Herald reporting connected the labor dispute with reported firefighter departures and concerns about compensation, morale, recruitment and retention. Those are reported concerns surrounding the negotiations, not findings that Hialeah’s emergency services are currently failing.

The official records reviewed for this article do not establish current staffing levels, the number or timing of departures, changes in response times or an operational effect from the canceled meeting.

What residents should watch

For Hialeah residents, the longer-term questions are whether the negotiations produce changes affecting firefighter recruitment and retention and what any eventual agreement could mean for city labor costs. The records reviewed do not show that staffing or emergency response has been affected by the scheduling change.

It also remains unclear whether the city and union held bargaining between the canceled July 30 session and the Aug. 17 replacement date, whether the cancellation resulted from a documented scheduling issue or another reason, and whether either side has issued an updated public position. Current staffing figures and the number and timing of departures also require confirmation.

The next publicly listed bargaining session is Aug. 17 at Hialeah City Hall. Residents and firefighters will be watching for a tentative agreement, an impasse, a staffing update or another schedule change.
