Cranston voters face August 10 deadline to register ahead of 2026 primary
Cranston residents who need to register, update their name or address, or change party affiliation for Rhode Island’s 2026 statewide primary must act by Monday, August 10.
The statewide primary is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The Rhode Island Board of Elections lists August 10 as the voter-registration deadline and August 19 as the mail-ballot application deadline.
What the August 10 deadline covers
The August 10 deadline applies to new voter registrations, name or address changes and party-affiliation changes. Cranston’s election notice says residents may submit those changes online through Rhode Island’s voter registration portal at vote.ri.gov.
Residents who need local assistance can contact the Cranston Canvassing Authority at Cranston City Hall, 869 Park Ave. The office is in Room 100. The city lists regular office hours as Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Mail-ballot deadline is later
August 10 is not the deadline to apply for a mail ballot. A registered Cranston voter seeking a mail ballot for the September 9 primary must submit an application by 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2026, according to the city’s election notice. The state Board of Elections also lists August 19 as the application deadline.
Completed mail ballots must be received by the Rhode Island Board of Elections at 2000 Plainfield Pike in Cranston by 8 p.m. on Election Day, September 9. The city says completed ballots may also be returned during normal business hours to the Canvassing Authority office in Room 100 or placed in an official state Board of Elections drop box.
