Lansing Gas Eases, but Diesel Is Nearly $1.70 Above Last Year

Regular gasoline prices eased slightly in the Lansing-East Lansing metro on Monday, August 3, but both regular gas and diesel remained well above their levels from a week and a year earlier.

The latest AAA Michigan fuel-price table lists the metro average at $4.401 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.454 for diesel.

Regular gas and diesel moved differently

Regular gasoline fell 2.8 cents from the previous day’s $4.429 average. Diesel slipped about one-tenth of a cent from $5.455, making its daily movement effectively flat.

The larger trend remains upward. Regular gas is 15.9 cents higher than a week ago and $1.355 higher than a year ago. Diesel is up 23 cents from last week and $1.693 from a year earlier.

Compared with the July 29 fuel-price check, when regular gas was reported at $4.177 and diesel at $5.368 in the Lansing-East Lansing metro, both current averages are higher. The current AAA table is the source for Monday’s prices.

What the prices mean locally

For commuters and households, the small day-to-day decline in regular gas does not erase the effect of prices that remain more than a dollar above last year’s level. Drivers making long commutes, taking summer trips or managing multiple vehicles may see the difference most clearly in weekly fuel budgets.

Diesel matters especially for freight carriers, contractors, delivery drivers, farmers, utilities and other service businesses that operate work trucks or heavy equipment. Higher diesel costs can add pressure to operating budgets, even when the daily change at the pump is minimal.

Restaurants, retailers and other businesses that rely on deliveries or service vehicles may also have fuel expenses to watch. Those costs do not automatically translate into higher prices, but sustained fuel increases can become one factor in business planning and household spending decisions.

Broader Michigan and Midwest context

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a July 27 Midwest weekly gasoline average of $3.968 per gallon, a regional figure that is not a substitute for the Lansing metro average. The Michigan Public Service Commission has also described broader energy-cost uncertainty and potential effects on Michigan consumers and businesses.

Metro averages do not represent every station. Prices can vary by neighborhood, brand, payment method and time of day, so drivers should compare nearby pumps before filling up.
