Santa Ana sewer work on Alton Avenue reaches final restoration phase
OC San’s Santa Ana Trunk Sewer Rehabilitation Project has entered a final restoration phase on part of Alton Avenue, while drivers, cyclists and nearby residents continue to encounter construction controls.
The cured-in-place pipe rehabilitation is complete on Alton Avenue between Raitt Street and Fairview Street. Crews are now removing the temporary bypass system that maintained sewer service during construction, rehabilitating nearby manholes and restoring the roadway.
Pipe rehabilitation is complete
The project installed a new liner inside the existing regional sewer pipeline using the cured-in-place pipe method. OC San said the liner was successfully installed and is performing as intended.
An April 15, 2026 OC San status report confirmed that construction in Santa Ana began on the Alton Avenue segment between Fairview Street and Raitt Street. The agency’s July 24 project update places that segment in the bypass-removal and restoration stage.
Alton Avenue controls remain in place
Weekday lane closures and turn restrictions remain part of the work on Alton Avenue between Raitt Street and Fairview Street. OC San lists regular work hours as Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with lane closures scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Some traffic-control barriers may remain in place around the clock, even when active lane closures are limited to work hours. The Alton Avenue bike lane between Raitt Street and Fairview Street also remains closed until the temporary bypass system is removed.
OC San’s current outlook calls for bypass removal, manhole work and roadway restoration to continue into early August 2026. The agency says dates and times may change because of operational factors or inclement weather.
OC San also lists additional work between Bristol Street and Raitt Street as ongoing through October 2026. That area involves a temporary bypass system and related traffic controls, so conditions can vary by segment and activity.
Greenville Street closure had a separate repair
A separate repair at the Greenville Street and Alton Avenue intersection required Greenville Street to close fully between Alton Avenue and Garry Avenue from July 20 through July 31, according to OC San’s July 24 update.
The posted detour used Fairview Street and Raitt Street. The notice also identified one westbound lane closure on Alton Avenue near the Greenville Street work area.
Because July 31 has passed, drivers should not assume the Greenville Street closure remains in effect on August 3 without a newer OC San notice. OC San said additional deterioration was identified during construction and that repairs were needed to support the rehabilitated pipeline.
What Santa Ana travelers should watch next
For commuters, the immediate issue is that Alton Avenue travel controls remain during restoration even though the pipe-lining work is finished. Cyclists should continue to avoid the closed bike lane between Raitt Street and Fairview Street until bypass equipment is removed.
Nearby residents may see construction activity associated with roadway restoration, manhole rehabilitation and related traffic control. OC San directs residents and commuters to check its Santa Ana project updates for changes to closure dates, work hours and reopening timing.
