GDOT plans 39 more truck spaces at Cook County’s I-75 Rest Area No. 5

Georgia transportation officials are planning a 39-space truck-parking expansion at Rest Area No. 5 on northbound Interstate 75 in Cook County, near Adel but outside the city limits. The Georgia Department of Transportation identifies the project as PI 0020366. If built as currently described, the rest area’s truck-parking capacity would increase from 26 spaces to 65.

The project is planned, not an announcement of near-term construction. GDOT’s current project record lists preliminary engineering in program year 2025 and construction in the 2033 program year. The record gives a construction estimate of $9,570,296.66, dated June 15, 2026.

Expansion would extend the lot north and east

GDOT’s project description calls for expanding the existing parking area north and east across an area of roughly 0.2 miles. The documented site work includes filling low-lying floodplain areas and removing significant trees.

Those details describe the proposed physical scope. They do not establish that construction has begun or that all environmental and other project approvals are complete.

The rest area is in Cook County, not Adel

GDOT’s statewide rest-area listing places Rest Area No. 5 on northbound I-75 at milepost 46.7 in Cook County. The agency separately lists Cook County’s southbound Rest Area No. 6 at milepost 48.0.

The northbound facility is outside Adel’s municipal boundaries. Adel is relevant because it is the Cook County seat and because the rest area is part of the I-75 corridor serving the county and nearby communities. This is therefore a state transportation project in the county area, not an Adel municipal construction project.

The Cook County and Cities of Adel, Cecil, Lenox and Sparks 2020 Comprehensive Plan identifies Cook County’s I-75 interchanges as opportunities for additional business and development. Its interchange-character-area discussion describes those areas as gateways and locations for commercial, service and other interstate-oriented activity. That plan provides local context for why an I-75 project matters to Adel readers, but it does not establish a specific economic result from PI 0020366.

Potential operational relevance, with limits

Additional designated truck spaces could improve parking availability for commercial drivers using this stretch of I-75. More available parking could also provide an operational benefit for interstate travel, but the records reviewed do not quantify future changes in congestion, crashes or traffic volumes.

That report provides context about the consequences of disruptions on the corridor; it does not show that truck-parking shortages caused the incident or that the proposed expansion would prevent future delays.
