Prattville leaders seek public input as city weighs school system or county funding partnership

Prattville officials and Autauga County education leaders have moved the city’s school-funding debate into a public-input phase, but no decision was made at a July 13, 2026 roundtable.

The discussion focused on whether Prattville should pursue an independent city school system, negotiate a long-term funding partnership with Autauga County Schools, or consider another arrangement for future facilities and financing. The meeting was a work session and discussion—not a vote, referendum, approval or binding agreement.

What happened at the roundtable

The Alabama Open Meetings Act notice said the Autauga County Board of Education would meet with other governmental agencies at Central Alabama Community College in Prattville to discuss the future of education. Elmore-Autauga News reported that city leaders, school officials, county commissioners and state legislators discussed aging campuses, enrollment growth, financing limits and the possibility of a new Prattville High School.

Before the meeting ended, city leaders announced a public survey and a future public-input meeting. Elmore-Autauga News reported that residents were encouraged to complete the survey through the city-linked public form. No response deadline or separate official city survey notice was located as of August 4.

Facilities and growth are driving the debate

The immediate concern described in Autauga County Schools-published feasibility-study material is facilities and growth, not an announced academic crisis. The district’s summary says many Prattville-area schools require significant maintenance because of their age, while growth in Pine Level and Marbury is adding pressure to existing facilities.

Local reporting identified several Prattville campuses built decades ago, including Prattville Primary School, Prattville Intermediate, Prattville Junior High, Prattville Elementary and Prattville High School. A possible new Prattville High School is part of the broader facilities discussion, but it remains a proposal rather than an approved, funded or scheduled construction project.

The district-published study summary also says officials considered a hybrid funding partnership, a possible city school system and a modification plan using existing facilities with possible construction projects. The summary is institutional study information, not independent confirmation that any option has been adopted.

Two principal options

One option publicly discussed is creating a Prattville city school system. That could change who governs schools inside the city and would require decisions about administrative costs, reserves, funding arrangements, facilities and the treatment of students living inside and outside the proposed system’s boundaries. The feasibility-study summary says a potential city system would require additional taxes and a startup timeline of about 15 months, but those are study projections rather than adopted policy.

The other principal option is to keep schools under Autauga County Schools while negotiating a durable city-county funding partnership. That approach would preserve the current county governance structure but would require agreement on how future construction, maintenance and other long-term needs are financed.

Prattville presents a boundary question because the city spans Autauga and Elmore counties. A future plan would need to address how students and revenue connected to the city’s Elmore County portion would be treated. Autauga County Schools currently describes itself as the only public school system in the City of Prattville and Autauga County, serving students from four communities.

Prattville already supports education

The city’s FY2026 budget presentation says the City Council allocated 25%, or approximately $2.1 million, of the one-cent sales tax for education-related expenses within the city. It identifies approximately $525,000 for Central Alabama Community College, approximately $1.05 million for the Autauga County Board of Education before the stated school-resource-officer adjustment, and $400,000 for The Pratt project.

A separate city allocation chart dated July 15, 2025 provides more detailed FY2025 figures. It lists an education bucket of $2,090,892.86, including $522,723.21 for Central Alabama Community College, $814,580.95 for the Autauga County Board of Education, and $230,865.48 for 75% of the value of four school-resource officers. The document says the Central Alabama Community College and Autauga County Board of Education agreements expire September 30, 2026.

The records show an existing financial relationship, but they do not establish a permanent future commitment or determine how the school-system debate will end. The September 30 date gives city and school officials a near-term point at which existing agreements must be reviewed or renewed.

Questions residents may need to weigh

Residents may ultimately need to compare the costs and benefits of separate city governance with continued county control supported by a long-term agreement. Key unanswered questions include the source of construction money, whether taxes or other revenue commitments would change, the timetable for legal and financial analysis, facilities ownership, student assignment and how students in both counties would be served.

For parents, teachers, homeowners, renters and businesses, the consequences could extend beyond school administration. Decisions about campuses, enrollment and facilities could affect school travel, household costs, teacher recruitment and the city’s long-term service commitments. Those effects remain potential outcomes, not decisions already made.

As of August 4, 2026, Prattville officials had announced a process for gathering public input—not a final structure for local schools. The next concrete developments are confirmation of the survey process and deadline, the timing of a public-input meeting, and any formal proposals brought to the city, county or school board.
