Irvine’s Hoag Sun Family Campus nears September opening after surgical pavilion launch
Hoag’s Irvine campus has begun accepting patients in its new Surgical Pavilion, while the remaining phases of the Sun Family Campus expansion are approaching a projected September 2026 opening period.
The phased rollout gives Irvine residents access to expanded surgical facilities before the hospital activates additional maternity, neonatal and specialty-care spaces. Hoag has not announced a specific September opening day for the broader expansion.
What opened May 4
The 130,000-square-foot Surgical Pavilion opened May 4, according to an opening account published by the Hoag Hospital Foundation on June 12. It is the first new pavilion on the expanded Irvine campus to welcome patients.
The pavilion includes eight operating rooms, advanced surgical technology, a 24-room intensive care unit and the campus’s first patient discharge lounge. Hoag says a hybrid operating room is part of the facility but will open at a later date.
For patients, the immediate change is additional surgical space and a new discharge area designed to support the transition from hospital care to home. Hoag describes the intensive-care space as part of the pavilion’s expanded surgical-care capacity.
What remains on the September timeline
Hoag’s broader plan calls for six new buildings, 155 inpatient beds, 11 operating rooms, two additional procedure rooms and 120,000 square feet of ambulatory facilities.
Hoag identifies the Women’s Hospital for a September 2026 opening period. The planned facility includes 24 labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum suites, 21 antepartum and postpartum rooms, an obstetric triage area and a 17-bed neonatal intensive care unit.
The Women’s Hospital plans also include maternal-fetal-health services, maternal mental-health programming and a Comprehensive Breast Center. Hoag says the new NICU, together with a planned NICU expansion at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach, is intended to increase neonatal capacity and reduce critical transfers to other facilities. The hospital has not published a final service-activation schedule or quantified the effect for Irvine families.
More specialty care planned
The remaining campus expansion is designed to add cancer and digestive-health services in Irvine. Hoag’s campus overview describes a two-floor cancer center with clinic and infusion space, a specialized pharmacy, gastrointestinal and fluoroscopy labs, six gastrointestinal procedure suites, 70 inpatient rooms and 24-hour urgent care for cancer patients.
Those facilities remain part of the phased expansion unless Hoag confirms that a particular clinic or procedure is already operating. Families seeking maternity, neonatal, cancer or digestive care should confirm availability and scheduling directly with Hoag.
What patients and visitors should know
Campus access has changed. Hoag says patients and visitors should enter through the new front doors near the covered entrance. Check-in locations remain service-specific, with signs and staff available to direct people after arrival.
Valet service is available at the new entrance from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Emergency-department patients should use P1 East, the P9 parking lot or emergency-department valet. Other patients and visitors should park in P1 East or P2 West and walk to the new front entrance.
Hoag’s current public materials do not establish a confirmed construction-related traffic effect, parking-demand estimate or staffing total for the expansion. Those remain practical questions as additional buildings and services begin opening.
For Irvine residents, the key distinction is between a Surgical Pavilion already serving patients and other facilities still moving through a phased opening. September 2026 remains the stated opening period for the Women’s Hospital and broader campus expansion, but the exact date and the sequence for activating individual services have not been publicly specified.
