Irvine approves new athletic field and Fieldhouse fees, effective Aug. 8
Irvine approved hourly fees for outdoor athletic fields and the Irvine Fieldhouse, with resident-priority rules taking effect around Aug. 8.
Irvine families, league organizers, and tournament planners are facing a new reservation system for city athletic space after the Irvine City Council approved updated fees for outdoor athletic fields and the Irvine Fieldhouse on June 9, 2026.
The change replaces the older setup used for some athletic users with an hourly reservation model. City staff said the update is meant to better match how other city facilities are priced, align Irvine with regional athletic-facility rates, and support the city’s General Fund. The staff report projects the outdoor-field transition could generate about $150,000 in additional annual revenue.
The resolution adopted by the council also establishes fees for the Irvine Fieldhouse, the city’s indoor athletic facility. The council action is final, not a proposal, and the fees are scheduled to take effect 60 days after approval, which puts the implementation date at about Aug. 8, 2026.
What changed for field reservations
According to the city’s staff report, the new outdoor-field system moves athletic reservations to hourly pricing rather than the prior per-player, per-season arrangement used for certain approved local sports groups. The report says the hourly model is intended to be clearer for user groups and easier for the city to administer.
The city also said the update is designed to keep support for youth sports while giving Irvine residents priority in access and allocation. Instead of relying only on total participant counts, the policy uses the share of Irvine residents in each organization when setting allocations.
The adopted schedule is not a flat rate for everyone. Fees vary by category, including youth nonprofit organizations, schools, government users, adult nonprofit groups, private individuals, universities and colleges, and commercial or for-profit users. Tournament and camp reservations also remain subject to separate pricing rules.
Why the city says it is making the change
City staff told commissioners and council members that hourly pricing is the prevailing regional standard for athletic facilities. The report cites neighboring agencies and says the new rates were shaped to stay competitive while recovering more of the city’s costs.
The resolution also says the adopted fees are charges for using city property, not a tax under state constitutional rules. And it authorizes the Community & Library Services Department to increase reservation-related fees and deposits by up to 10% annually beginning Jan. 1, 2027.
For parents, coaches, and tournament organizers, the practical takeaway is simple: check the new schedule before making fall reservations or renewing recurring bookings. The new pricing system, resident-priority rules, and Fieldhouse fees will shape how local sports groups plan budgets and secure city space in the months ahead.
