Pawtucket families can still act on summer preschool registration notices
Pawtucket families who received a July or August acceptance notice for a 2026-27 preschool program should begin the district’s registration process now. The Pawtucket School Department says enrollment continues until the start of school.
This step is for families whose children were accepted into a Pawtucket School Department preschool or Rhode Island Pre-K program. A waitlist notice is different, and submitting registration without an acceptance does not create a preschool seat.
Acceptance comes before registration
The district says lottery results are released in mid-July and families are notified by email whether their child was accepted or waitlisted for the programs they selected.
Families who receive an acceptance notice in July or August are invited to begin online district registration. Registration completes enrollment paperwork; it is not a second lottery or a placement process. Families should confirm that their notice says the child was accepted before treating registration as the next step.
The state’s 2026-27 RI Pre-K lottery application deadline was June 22, 2026. This registration guidance applies to families who have already received a program decision. The Rhode Island Department of Education lists Pawtucket as an eligible community and the Pawtucket School Department as a participating RI Pre-K provider.
Who qualifies for 2026-27 programs
Pawtucket’s free preschool opportunities are available to city residents whose children turn 3 or 4 on or before September 1, 2026.
For RI Pre-K, the child must be 4 years old by September 1, 2026. RI Pre-K is a state-funded general-education program with limited seats. Pawtucket’s integrated preschool programs serve 3- and 4-year-olds under different class-size and special-education support structures, so families should rely on their acceptance notice and information from the district for placement-specific details.
Documents to collect
The district’s registration checklist calls for:
- Two current proofs of Pawtucket residency, such as a bank statement, health insurance statement, payroll stub, federal, state or local government correspondence, car insurance bill, utility bill or lease;
- The child’s birth certificate;
- A parent photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport;
- A physical examination record;
- Required immunization records; and
- Vision and lead-screening records.
Both residency documents must be current within 30 days and show the parent’s name, date and address. The district says the physical examination must be completed within 12 months before school begins or within six months after the child starts. Medical and immunization records must also be provided.
Where Pawtucket RI Pre-K classrooms are located
The district lists RI Pre-K classrooms at Fallon Memorial Elementary School, Henry J. Winters Elementary School and Francis J. Varieur Elementary School. It also identifies community-based RI Pre-K locations in Pawtucket.
Community-based programs may offer extended hours or before- and after-care options, but families should not assume a particular schedule, location or full-day placement unless it is confirmed in the acceptance notice or by the district. The district also says hours and locations for some Pawtucket integrated programs are shared after the lottery.
Transportation and program details
Pawtucket says preschool transportation generally is not provided because preschool is not mandatory and is not offered at every school. Students with transportation services written into an IEP receive transportation as described in that IEP, unless the selected RI Pre-K placement is at a community-based center. In that case, the family must provide transportation to the center.
Parents of children with IEPs should confirm placement, services and transportation directly with the district.
How to get registration help
Families can complete the district’s online registration after receiving an acceptance notice. The district says some children already enrolled in its 3-year-old program, and some children with IEPs attending a community-based program, may not need to re-register. Families should follow the instructions in their notice or contact the district if they are unsure.

The key distinction remains: applying enters a family into a lottery, an acceptance or waitlist notice communicates the result, and registration completes paperwork after acceptance. Registration alone does not secure a Pawtucket preschool seat.
