Guatemala Selects United Kingdom as Partner for Guatemala City’s Proposed Metro Riel
Guatemala has selected the United Kingdom as a partner for Metro Riel, a major proposed rail-transit project intended to serve Guatemala City. The two governments signed the agreement in Guatemala City on July 9, 2026, moving the project into an international partnership phase.
The announcement, made by the UK government on July 14, says UK representatives will share experience from major infrastructure projects delivered in the United Kingdom and internationally. It identifies the UK as a partner for Metro Riel, but does not specify whether that role will involve financing, technical assistance, procurement support or a combination of those functions.
The next meaningful development would be the release of those details or a later agreement defining the partnership. Until then, July 9, 2026, marks the date on which Guatemala and the United Kingdom formalized the UK’s role as a partner in the proposed Metro Riel project for Guatemala City.
