Plantation Receives $7.5 Million Grant for Midtown Bridge

Plantation has received a $7.5 million federal grant to help fund a proposed bridge connecting Southwest 17th Street with State Road 84 in the city’s Midtown area.

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the funding through its FY 2026 BUILD grant program. The project, known as the Plantation Midtown Bridge, is intended to create a new east-west connection in an area where city engineers say traffic is concentrated at two major chokepoints.

The award is a significant funding commitment for a bridge with an estimated total cost of nearly $10.5 million. It does not mean construction has started, however. The city says the design is complete, while permits from the Florida Department of Transportation and the South Florida Water Management District are being finalized.

What the grant will support

The proposed bridge would link Southwest 17th Street and State Road 84, giving drivers another route through Midtown. The city says the connection is intended to reduce congestion and improve emergency-evacuation resilience.

Plantation city engineers estimate that the bridge could reduce traffic at the city’s two largest chokepoints by up to 15 percent. That figure is a projection, not a measured result, and would apply only if the project is completed and used as expected.

The federal grant is part of a broader funding effort. Broward County has approved a $3 million match from transportation-surtax funds, and the Plantation Midtown fund has spent about $1.3 million on design and engineering.

Those figures represent different pieces of the project’s funding and development history. The nearly $10.5 million figure is the estimated total project cost; the federal award does not establish that the grant alone covers the full cost.

Permits are the next step

With design work complete, the remaining permitting work is a key step before construction can move forward. The two agencies involved are the Florida Department of Transportation and the South Florida Water Management District.

The federal award therefore advances the planned project financially, but it is not an opening of a new roadway or the start of bridge construction. The city has not set a construction date.

For residents and drivers, the proposed connection could eventually change traffic patterns around the two chokepoints identified by city engineers. It is also intended to add transportation redundancy during an emergency evacuation, although the bridge’s effect on daily travel will depend on its final completion and use.

The project’s immediate public timeline is tied to permitting rather than construction. Plantation has completed the design phase, is finalizing the required permits and has secured the federal grant and county participation described in the city’s July 29, 2026 update.

Until those permitting steps are complete and a construction schedule is announced, the Midtown Bridge remains a funded proposal rather than an active construction project. The planned route would connect Southwest 17th Street and State Road 84 if the project advances through the remaining approvals.
