Plantation warns residents about filtration sales pitches over tap water
Plantation FL – City says some home filtration companies are contacting residents with tap-water claims. Rely on the city’s testing and annual report.
Plantation’s Utilities Department is urging residents to be cautious about home water filtration sales pitches that make claims about the city’s tap water. In a consumer-protection notice dated July 16, 2026, the city said it learned some companies are contacting residents and/or posting claims about water supplied by the City of Plantation Utilities Department.
Plantation says its water treatment plants operate in full compliance with applicable drinking-water standards, including requirements set by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The city also emphasizes that the most reliable way to verify water quality is to use the testing results published through the city’s annual reporting—not to rely on private home test results promoted by vendors.
What Plantation is responding to
According to the city, some filtration companies are making claims that a household’s water has problems that need immediate treatment. Plantation’s warning is focused on how those claims can be misleading: the city says any testing a private company performs inside a home may be affected by the home’s internal plumbing, fixtures, or privately owned filtration devices.
In other words, the city says those results may not be representative of the quality of water delivered through Plantation’s public water system.
How the city says Plantation’s water is tested
Plantation Utilities says it collects samples at the treatment plants every two hours and also regularly tests water throughout the distribution system. The city adds that the samples are analyzed by licensed operators as well as state-certified laboratory staff.
Residents who want to evaluate any water-quality claim connected to the public system are directed back to the city’s own testing and annual water reporting, which reflects the regulated process for monitoring drinking water.
What residents should do next
The city’s notice says residents can verify information by reviewing Plantation’s Annual Water Quality Report (CCR) for testing results and details about the city’s sampling program. The city also encourages residents to contact Utilities with questions.
Plantation residents with concerns can reach the Utilities Department at water@plantation.org or 954-797-2209.
Background on PFAS and how Plantation describes its treatment
For residents following PFAS coverage in the broader news, Plantation points to its treatment approach. The city says it has used nanofiltration for decades, describing the process as a technology that removes contaminants (including PFAS) while allowing essential minerals to pass through.
Plantation Utilities also describes its water treatment as using advanced thin film composite membrane systems as part of treating raw groundwater before distribution to customers. Florida DEP also describes how state and federal rules address PFAS monitoring and compliance for community water systems, including how EPA’s amended PFAS requirements incorporate monitoring and compliance expectations.
If a home filtration seller’s claims conflict with what Plantation reports through its CCR, the city says residents should start with the city’s official testing and ask Utilities directly.
