Louisiana National Guard completes New Orleans security patrols after 4,126 missions

The Louisiana National Guard completed its final security patrols in New Orleans early Aug. 24, ending the operational phase of an eight-month deployment focused on public safety in and around the French Quarter.

The Guard’s official release says the deployment is scheduled to conclude Aug. 31, 2026. That creates a distinction between the end of field patrols and the formal closeout of the mission.

What the Guard reported

The deployment began in late December 2025 with more than 350 Louisiana National Guard soldiers supporting Operation NOLA Safe. The force initially provided security during New Year’s Eve, the Sugar Bowl and Carnival Season before being reduced to approximately 120 soldiers in March 2026.

As of Aug. 24, the Guard reported:

• 4,126 patrols
• 31,162 patrol hours
• 401 significant activities
• Assistance with 171 arrests
• Support during 48 de-escalation incidents
• 103 first-aid responses

The mission included presence patrols, joint patrols with law-enforcement agencies, access-control duties and quick-reaction-force operations. Guard soldiers worked alongside the Louisiana State Police, the New Orleans Police Department and other partner agencies.

The Guard’s role was to support law enforcement and public-safety operations, not to replace the independent authority of police agencies. The Louisiana National Guard says continued security operations will remain with local and state law-enforcement partners, including NOPD and Louisiana State Police, along with other participating agencies.

Crime comparisons were reported for the 8th District

The Louisiana National Guard also cited changes in selected New Orleans 8th Police District crime figures compared with the same period in 2025. The Guard reported that homicides fell from 15 to two, simple robberies from 13 to nine, armed robberies from eight to seven and aggravated batteries from 17 to 15.

Those figures do not establish that Guard patrols alone caused the reductions. The Guard said the changes occurred during a broader multi-agency public-safety effort involving local, state and federal partners.

Associated Press reporting independently confirmed the eight-month deployment, the reduction from the larger initial force to a smaller contingent and the Guard’s withdrawal from New Orleans. Axios New Orleans also reported the departure after more than 4,100 patrols and the return of responsibility to law-enforcement agencies.

What the change means in New Orleans

Residents, workers, visitors and French Quarter businesses will no longer see the Guard’s temporary deployment presence as part of the mission’s regular patrol operations. Local and state law-enforcement agencies will continue to manage security, visibility, incident response and coordination in the district.

The available reports confirm the handoff but do not establish that overall French Quarter police coverage is being reduced. They also do not support predictions about future crime, tourism or business conditions.

For now, the confirmed change is that the temporary National Guard patrol mission has completed its field operations, while New Orleans’ regular public-safety partners continue the security effort.
