Virginia awards $22.7 million for 17 community projects
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger announced $22,738,858.67 in Community Development Block Grant awards for 17 projects across the state on Oct. 6. The grants range from $564,183 for downtown revitalization in Honaker to $2 million for a leachate tank in Tazewell County.
The project list includes housing rehabilitation, water and sewer work, road improvements, downtown revitalization and an early learning center. The awards go to counties, cities and towns named in the state’s list.

The list covers different types of work rather than a single statewide construction program. Housing-related awards include rehabilitation projects in Westmoreland and York counties, a project combining infrastructure with housing production in Floyd County, and housing projects in Lawrenceville and Pennington Gap. Water and sewer work is named in the Wise County and Bridgewater projects; other awards include road rehabilitation in Henry County and downtown or business-district improvements in Blackstone, Fincastle, Tazewell and Honaker.
Martinsville’s $1.25 million award is for an early learning center. The Tazewell County grant is for a leachate tank. Those project names identify uses distinct from the housing, downtown and infrastructure work described elsewhere in the award list.
Funding and project timing
The governor’s office said the projects include $9.7 million in local leveraged investments. It also described the awards as leveraging about $19 million in new federal Housing and Urban Development funding combined with money carried over from the previous year. The announcement does not say whether the local investments are committed or already disbursed.
The award list identifies each project and grant amount, but the governor’s announcement does not give project-by-project start dates, completion schedules or award conditions. The announcement therefore establishes the grant allocations, not when construction or other work will begin or finish.
