Isaias reached 80 mph as warnings stood in Oct. 8 update
Hurricane Isaias had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph in a 4:23 a.m. CDT Thursday, Oct. 8, update from the National Weather Service. The update listed hurricane warnings for Escambia Coastal and Escambia Inland, and a storm-surge warning for Escambia Coastal. It placed the storm about 550 miles south-southwest of Pensacola.
That warning status describes the situation in the early-morning update. The weather service said there had been no watch or warning changes in that update; its Oct. 7 statement had reported the warningsโ upgrades.
Wind report and warning zones
Isaias became the Atlantic seasonโs first hurricane on the evening of Oct. 7. The National Hurricane Centerโs 1 a.m. CDT advisory on Oct. 8 reported maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. The later National Weather Service statement reported 80 mph. Those figures reflect the reports at the respective update times.
The warnings covered two Escambia County zones, but the storm-surge warning applied only to the coastal zone. The warning zones included the Pensacola area. Residents and businesses in Escambia Coastal were covered by both warnings; Escambia Inland was covered by the hurricane warning.
The National Weather Service expected Isaias to continue intensifying, while saying its eventual speed and track remained uncertain. The National Hurricane Center forecast a possible northern Gulf Coast landfall late Friday, Oct. 9, or early Saturday, Oct. 10. That was a forecast, not a confirmed track or outcome.
Pensacola-area preparations
Pensacola-area electric utilities were positioning crews to respond to possible outages, the Associated Press reported. The AP also reported that city officials made sand available for sandbags. The reported actions were preparations for possible effects; the AP account did not report confirmed local outages or damage.
The warning coverage and wind speed above are tied to the National Weather Serviceโs 4:23 a.m. update, not a later storm status. With the stormโs speed and track still uncertain, the forecast landfall window could change.
