Schaumburg keeps four-way stop in National Parkway plan
The Schaumburg Village Board chose to retain the all-way stop at National Parkway and Thacker Street rather than install a proposed mini-roundabout. The decision came at the boardโs Oct. 13, 2026, meeting and keeps the intersectionโs current four-way-stop configuration in the planned project.
The choice applies to the intersection, not the whole National Parkway project. The villageโs capital plan describes reconstruction from Higgins Road to Thacker Drive and resurfacing from Thacker Drive to Schaumburg Road. The Daily Herald reported that reconstruction is planned for 2030.
Intersection choice and project scope
Village project materials label the mini-roundabout as Option A and the all-way stop as Option B. The board agenda recommended Option A for National Parkway project Segments 1 and 2, and Option B for the intersection. The Daily Herald reported that the board selected the all-way stop at National and Thacker instead of the mini-roundabout proposed by transportation staff.
The village capital plan had listed a roundabout at National Parkway and Thacker Street for evaluation. The broader work covers National Parkway between Higgins Road and Schaumburg Road, with different treatments planned for the two stretches on either side of Thacker Drive.
Estimated costs and resident concerns
The Daily Herald reported these estimates for the two intersection options. They are estimates, not final construction bids.
| Option | Estimated total cost | Estimated village share |
|---|---|---|
| Mini-roundabout | $1.5 million | $300,000 |
| All-way stop | $300,000 | $60,000 |
About 350 residents signed a petition opposing a change to the intersection configuration, the Daily Herald reported. Trustees said residentsโ opposition influenced the boardโs choice. Trustee Mark Madej said the board had to balance what the community was asking for; Trustee Brian Bieschke questioned whether keeping the all-way stop was best for the overall community.
Transportation staff argued that a roundabout would be safer. Bieschke cited a study indicating that about 42% of vehicles fully stop at the intersection, according to the Daily Herald. That figure was attributed to the study he cited, not presented as a new finding by the board. The discussion therefore included staffโs safety argument alongside residentsโ objections to changing the intersection.
For people using National Parkway, the selected plan keeps the stop-controlled intersection while the wider road work remains planned. The Daily Herald reported 2030 as the planned year for reconstruction.
