North Charleston police say Shakira Jones, 23, of Summerville, was arrested Oct. 22, 2026, after officers pursued a school bus she was driving. Her young son was aboard, according to police. The departmentโs arrest listing names three charges: failure to stop for blue lights and sirens, driving under the influence and child endangerment. The charges are allegations, not findings of guilt.
Police said they received an alert shortly before 3:30 p.m. about an erratically driven bus on Palmetto Commerce Parkway. Officers later saw it traveling about 65 mph in a posted 45 mph zone, police said. The driver did not stop when officers signaled, according to the departmentโs account, which describes a pursuit along Ashley Phosphate Road.
The reported speed was about 20 mph above the limitโroughly 44% higher than 45 mph. That comparison is based on the speed and limit reported by police; it is not a separate speed measurement.
Police said the bus entered a parking lot where school staff were present and that staff took evasive action. The department also alleged that Jones placed her son in front of her as officers approached. Police said officers removed the child and later turned him over to a relative.
The arrest listing says Jones was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center. It reports the arrest and charges; it does not establish that any offense occurred.
