Woman dies, Aiken County deputy recovering after Scotch Lane shooting
A woman died and an Aiken County deputy was injured in a shooting at a home on Scotch Lane on Oct. 5. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating at the sheriff’s office’s request.
SLED identified the woman as 38-year-old Amanda Buckner and said she died at a hospital. The deputy was recovering, the agency said. Sheriff Marty Sawyer identified the deputy as Ethan Crosby at a news conference on Oct. 6, according to WRDW.
SLED’s account of the shooting
SLED said deputies responded earlier that day to a hit-and-run involving a gray Chevrolet truck and a separate disturbance call. After a short pursuit, the woman shot a deputy and ran him over with the truck, according to the agency. Deputies returned fire, SLED said. This is SLED’s account of the sequence, not a final investigative finding.
SLED announced its investigation on Oct. 6, the day after the shooting. The agency said the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office requested the investigation.
SLED’s counts and investigation
In its Oct. 6 release, SLED reported 31 officer-involved shootings statewide in 2026, including this incident, and three involving Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputies. For 2025, the agency counted 45 statewide and two involving the sheriff’s office.
The investigation is ongoing. SLED said it will summarize its findings in a case file for prosecutors.
