The fourth round of Lexington-Fayetteโs medical-debt program brings its reported cumulative debt abolishment to $31,318,603.59, with $8,157,509.54 announced for 4,189 Fayette County residents, Undue Medical Debt said Oct. 27.
The reported dollar totals add up: the $23,161,094.05 cumulative total reported after the June round plus the latest $8,157,509.54 equals the new cumulative figure.
How the October round compares with June
The October roundโs reported amount is $3,307,363.41 more than the $4,850,146.13 reported for 2,185 residents in June. Dividing each roundโs reported debt by its recipient count gives an average of about $1,947 per person in October and $2,220 in June. Those are group averages, not amounts promised to individual residents.
The reported recipient totals do not add up: the June release listed 11,825 people cumulatively, and adding 4,189 in this round gives 16,014. The October announcement instead reports 15,144 cumulatively, a difference of 870. Undue does not explain the discrepancy, so the cumulative count is not a reconciled tally of people across the rounds.
Eligibility and what recipients should know
Eligibility requires current Lexington-Fayette County residency and either household income at or below 400% of the federal poverty guidelines or medical debt equal to at least 5% of annual income. Residents cannot apply; relief is automatic for qualifying debt Undue can acquire from participating providers or debt collectors.
Meeting the criteria does not mean every medical bill will be canceled. The program cancels debt, not pays cash, and relief may not cover all of a recipientโs medical debt. Undue says it will mail notices soon and advises recipients to keep them as proof; it has not specified when the letters will arrive.
Council approved the partnership in 2024; contract followed in 2025
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council allocated $1 million to the initiative in October 2024 and approved its contract with Undue in June 2025. The City says the allocation had the potential to relieve upwards of $90 million in medical debt. That figure is a potential, not a report of debt already abolished; the programโs reported cumulative total is now $31.3 million.
