Albany was awarded a $75,000 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Urban & Community Forestry grant for nearly 100 planned trees along Second Avenue, from Elizabeth Street to Delaware Avenue, Mayor Dorcey Applyrs announced Oct. 29, 2026. The cityโs Department of General Services will manage the project.
The award works out to roughly $750 in grant funding per planned tree if โnearly 100โ is used as a rough denominator. It is not a disclosed per-tree cost: the city did not provide an exact count or detailed project budget. The city says the grant opportunity is funded through New Yorkโs Environmental Protection Fund. DEC describes its program as supporting municipal tree planting and care.
The trees are planned, not planted, and the city has not announced when planting will begin or finish. If planted and recorded, they can count toward New Yorkโs goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033, a statewide target rather than an Albany quota.
