Republican Michael Alfonso defeated Democrat Fred Clark in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, keeping the northern Wisconsin seat in Republican hands. Wisconsin Public Radio reported that the Associated Press called the race Tuesday night; its unofficial snapshot showed Alfonso with 56.1% and Clark with 43.9%, with 79% of the vote counted.
Alfonso will succeed Republican Tom Tiffany, who ran for governor instead of seeking another House term. The 26-year-old political newcomer is the son-in-law of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who previously represented the district.
