Washington, D.C.’s Initiative 86 held a wide lead in the Board of Elections’ unofficial citywide count. The proposal to prohibit force-feeding birds and selling products made through that practice received 117,053 yes votes, or 73.31%, compared with 42,615 no votes, or 26.69%.
The official voter guide says the measure would ban force-feeding intended to enlarge a bird’s liver and the sale or distribution of resulting products, including foie gras. Enforcement would fall to the Department of Energy and Environment during routine food safety inspections, with civil penalties. The published count is an election-night snapshot and remains unofficial.
