Athens gets state grant for Food City road work on west side
Athens AL – A new state grant will help fund road, turning-lane, and drainage work for a future Food City on West Elm Street and Lucas Ferry Road.
Athens has a new state grant for road work tied to a future Food City on the city’s west side, another sign that the West Elm Street and Lucas Ferry Road corridor is moving into a new phase of construction.
Gov. Kay Ivey announced May 27 that Athens will receive $266,660 for infrastructure tied to the project, with the city adding a $322,207 local match. The money will help pay for work needed to support the development site.
According to the state release, Food City plans a 57,000-square-foot supermarket at 17878 Lucas Ferry Road. Officials say the project represents a $19.5 million private investment and is expected to bring about 100 jobs.
The planned work includes widening parts of West Elm Street and Lucas Ferry Road, adding deceleration and turning lanes, and improving drainage near the intersection. For drivers, shoppers, and nearby businesses, that likely means more construction activity and possible traffic changes while the work is underway.
The City Council’s May 26 agenda also showed the Food City address on Lucas Ferry Road, underscoring that the project is still working through city business as the public road package moves forward.
