ADECA grant backs Athens development expected to create 100 jobs

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs announced May 27 that a grant will support an economic-development project in Athens expected to create 100 jobs.

The announcement identifies Athens as the project location and describes the jobs as an expectation, not as positions already created. ADECA did not state the dollar amount of the newly announced grant.

Earlier Athens funding

The announcement follows a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant that Gov. Kay Ivey awarded to Athens in December 2025 for the project.

ADECA also cited two grants totaling $800,000 that were announced in 2025 for a similar development in another part of the city. Those awards are separate from the $300,000 CDBG award in the public announcement and should not be treated as funding for the same project without additional grant documentation.

The funding involves more than one state-administered program. The Appalachian Regional Commission’s relevant program in Alabama is administered through ADECA, while the CDBG award was made to Athens by the governor.

What the announcement means for Athens

For residents and local businesses, the immediate development is the prospect of state-backed investment and 100 new jobs if the project advances as planned. The job figure is a projected result, so it does not establish that all 100 positions have been filled or that the development is complete.
