Boston’s World Cup plan closes Summer Street at South Station on match days
Boston MA – Summer Street by South Station will close or partly close on seven World Cup match days starting June 13, changing commuter and delivery access.
Boston and the MBTA have finalized a World Cup traffic plan that will close or partially close Summer Street near South Station on seven match days, starting Saturday, June 13. For commuters, delivery drivers, rideshare pickups, and nearby employers, the biggest change is a corridor shutdown right where one of the city’s busiest transit hubs meets a major downtown street.
According to the MBTA, Summer Street will be fully closed to vehicles between Dorchester Avenue and Atlantic Avenue for eight hours on June 13, June 19, June 29, and July 9. On June 16, June 23, and June 26, the street will stay open only on the westbound or north side. The section directly in front of South Station will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic during all seven matches while the agency sets up security screening and queuing space.
That means South Station riders should expect tighter curb access and slower traffic around the station entrance on match days. Drivers heading toward downtown or the Seaport should plan for reroutes and possible delays, especially where Summer Street feeds the blocks around Atlantic Avenue. Delivery crews and service vehicles may need to adjust loading times, and nearby restaurants, hotels, and offices may need to rethink arrival windows for staff and suppliers.
The city is also pointing businesses to World Cup planning resources, including guidance intended to help with scheduling, customer flow, and event preparation. That guidance is meant to help businesses prepare; it does not guarantee stronger foot traffic or sales.
The transit side of the plan matters as much as the street closure. The MBTA says riders should watch for World Cup service updates and ticketing guidance through mTicket for match days.
For Boston residents and workers, the practical bottom line is simple: treat June 13, June 16, June 19, June 23, June 26, June 29, and July 9 as possible disruption days around South Station. Leave extra time, check official transit notices before traveling, and assume loading, pickup, and drop-off patterns near Summer Street will be different on match days.
