New Orleans hosts 26th Satchmo SummerFest with free two-day program honoring Louis Armstrong
The 26th annual Satchmo SummerFest was held Aug. 1-2 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, offering a free two-day program of music, lectures and local food vendors in honor of Louis Armstrong.
Admission was free for the festival and included access to the museum during the weekend. The event took place at the museum, located at 400 Esplanade Ave.
French Quarter Festivals Inc. produced Satchmo SummerFest, which was presented by the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Foundation and hosted by the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
A program centered on Armstrong
The festival honors Armstrong’s life, music and legacy. Its published program combined musical performances with lectures, local cuisine and museum activities.
Organizers listed more than two dozen musical performances. Featured performers named in festival materials included Kermit Ruffins, Mark Braud’s All-Stars, Don Vappie, Jazz Creole, Hasizzle and TBC Brass Band.
Preview coverage from WDSU described 27 local and national bands in the lineup. That figure was part of pre-event reporting and does not establish that every scheduled act ultimately performed.
Indoor and outdoor activities
The museum described the weekend as including both indoor and outdoor activities. While the festival was hosted at the museum, the published schedule identified three outdoor stages; the available materials do not say that all performances took place outdoors.
Music was scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, and at noon Sunday, Aug. 2, according to the WDSU preview. The program also included a lecture series alongside the music schedule.
For attendees buying food or drinks, the event used cashless purchasing, according to the preview coverage. Festivalgoers therefore needed a non-cash payment method for those purchases, even though admission itself was free.
What is known after the weekend
The source materials establish the dates, venue, free-access policy and planned programming for the 26th edition. They do not provide a final attendance total or an economic-impact estimate.
No future Satchmo SummerFest date or next event announcement was included in the supplied materials. The published information therefore does not establish plans for a subsequent edition.
