Juneau keeps 2026 glacial-flood response system active as officials monitor Suicide Basin
The City and Borough of Juneau is keeping its 2026 glacial-flood response and preparedness system active for a potential release from Suicide Basin, even as the city says no flooding is expected at present.
In its latest posted conditions notice, the city said the current risk to life and property from a glacial lake outburst flood remains low. Monitoring will continue throughout the season, according to the city’s emergency flood-response page.
The preparedness effort is focused on the Mendenhall River flood-inundation area and surrounding Mendenhall Valley. City materials direct residents to review the evacuation-advisory map and sign up for emergency alerts so they can receive instructions if conditions change.
Hotline began July 21
Juneau began operating a flood-information hotline on July 21 for non-emergency questions about Suicide Basin status, evacuation actions and related information. The number is (907) 500-0890.
The hotline is scheduled to operate on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The city says service will expand to weekends once Suicide Basin fills. After a flood release begins and a wireless emergency alert is issued, the hotline is to move to 24-hour service.
Those operational triggers are part of the city’s effort to maintain a public-information channel before and during a possible flood. The available city material does not document that a 2026 release had begun by Aug. 3, and it does not report a confirmed evacuation order.
Barriers, maps and transportation response
Among the city’s latest listed preparedness updates, Phase 1 reconstruction and repairs to HESCO flood barriers were completed July 10. The city also published a final flood-barrier-opening closure update dated July 21.
Juneau released a new evacuation map in July for the glacial outburst-flood threat, according to Alaska Public Media. The city’s emergency-response page includes the evacuation-advisory map as part of its local planning resources.
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has a designated role in the response framework, including road closures and support during an active response, the city says.
Officials have not identified a date or magnitude for any potential 2026 outburst. Residents in the mapped flood area can use the city’s alert and evacuation resources while monitoring continues; the next change in response posture would depend on basin conditions and, if a release begins, issuance of a wireless emergency alert.
