WHO sets 2030 goal for 24-hour health threat detection
The WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence has set an aspirational goal for every country to be able to detect and understand emerging health threats within 24 hours of their emergence by 2030. The goal is part of the Hub’s 2026–2030 strategy, launched Oct. 11 during the World Health Summit in Berlin. The summit runs Oct. 11–13.
The strategy calls for stronger surveillance systems, faster detection through innovation, better-informed decisions using applied analytics and knowledge translation, and trusted digital foundations. Five initiatives cover open-source epidemic intelligence, pathogen surveillance, analytical collaboration, collaborative surveillance and digital capabilities.
The target describes a future ambition, not current country performance or a binding requirement on governments. WHO’s announcement and strategy summary do not explain how the 24-hour interval will be defined or measured. They also provide no country-level baseline detection times, implementation deadlines or funding schedule. Countries and their public-health institutions are the intended beneficiaries and implementers of the capacity-building effort during the strategy period.
