Fontana warns residents about illegal fireworks, restricted zones ahead of July 4
Fontana says illegal fireworks face zero-tolerance enforcement, with no-fireworks zones in parts of the city and Safe and Sane sales starting June 28.
Fontana is reminding residents ahead of July 4 that illegal fireworks are not a slap-on-the-wrist issue. The city, working with San Bernardino County Fire, says enforcement follows a zero-tolerance policy, and fines for possession or use can run from $2,500 to $10,000.
The rules also vary by neighborhood. Fontana says all fireworks, including Safe and Sane fireworks, are prohibited in unincorporated areas within the city and in the area north of Summit Avenue. City code also bars fireworks in the high fire hazard area west of Interstate 15, north of Summit Avenue and east of Lytle Creek Road.
What residents can buy and when
For residents outside the restricted zones, Safe and Sane fireworks go on sale June 28. The city says sales run from noon to 10 p.m. on June 28, then from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily from June 29 through July 5. Use is limited to 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the days those fireworks are sold.
Fontana also warns shoppers not to assume a product is legal just because a seller calls it Safe and Sane. The city says fireworks without the state Safe and Sane logo are illegal.
How to report a violation
Residents who see illegal fireworks can report them by dialing 311 inside Fontana city limits, calling 909-507-2600 or using the city’s online reporting system. Fontana says those reports help fire investigators and law enforcement respond faster and reduce the risk of damage or serious injury.
The city’s June 15 newsletter also says Mayor Monday is highlighting Fontana’s illegal fireworks social-host ordinance, which is meant to hold property owners responsible when illegal fireworks are discharged on their property.
June 27 adds another holiday planning step
Fontana’s holiday calendar includes a June 27 4th of July Celebration at Summit High School from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with gates open from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The city says only clear stadium bags are allowed, fireworks are not permitted inside the venue, and the fireworks show starts at 9 p.m.
For residents, the checklist is simple: verify whether your address is in a no-fireworks zone, buy only legal Safe and Sane fireworks starting June 28, use them only during the city’s allowed hours and report illegal fireworks when you see them.
