What you must submit
Oakland County Electionsโ requirements for local school district board members include two core items:
- Affidavit of Identity and Receipt of Filing. The county says all candidates must submit an Affidavit of Identity when filing. It also notes that failing to file the affidavit as required can prevent placement on the ballot.
- Nominating petitions or a filing fee. For qualifying school districts with 10,000 or more in population, the county lists a requirement of at least 40 signatures and no more than 100 signatures from qualified and registered electors OR a $100.00 nonrefundable filing fee.
Oakland County further states that candidates must use School District Nominating Petitions if they are filing signatures in lieu of the $100.00 fee.
Campaigning on school property: read the districtโs rules first
Bloomfield Hills Schoolsโ board candidate guide says campaigning on school property is strictly prohibitedโand it applies to any candidate for elected office and anyone attempting to promote a ballot initiative.
What the guide says is permitted (among the listed allowances):
- An organized voter forum on school property only when all candidates for the specified public office are invited, and board policies are followed for displaying campaign materials.
- Candidates may distribute voter registration forms.
- Subject to BHS school dress codes, candidates may wear personal campaign apparel (for example, shirts, buttons, or hats) on school property.
What the guide says is prohibited includes:
- Using the district or school logo, mission, vision, or core values statements for political purposes.
- Candidates (and their committee members and supporters) may not campaign or display/distribute campaign material on school property. The guide lists examples such as literature/flyers, flags, banners, โwrappedโ vehicles, and campaign material affixed to school property.
- Using school facilities, equipment, staff (during working hours), or the school mail/email system to produce or disseminate political materials.
- Students and employees may not be used to distribute campaign literature or other campaign material within schools or on school grounds.
- BHS property canโt be used in campaign images: the guide says all BHS property is prohibited from use in photographs, videos, and other images that appear in campaign material. It also adds that photos taken for purposes other than campaigning that occur on school property are permitted if the district logo, mission, vision, or core values are not depicted.
If you have questions or concerns, the candidate guide says to direct them to the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, Kelly Bohl.
Last-week checklist (built around the 4 p.m. cutoff)
- Confirm your filing route before you collect anything (signatures route vs. filing fee route).
- Plan to finish paperwork well before Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Donโt assume youโll have time to correct issues after the deadline.
- Before any campus outreach, reread the โstrictly prohibitedโ campaign-on-property section and follow the guideโs permitted/ prohibited list.
And if youโre trying to get clarity on process requirements, Oakland County Electionsโ filing requirements document directs questions to its Elections Division using the contact information listed above.
