Sunrise explains what Florida’s property-tax plan could mean for city services

Sunrise officials say Florida’s proposed property-tax change could matter well beyond Tallahassee. In a city explainer posted May 30, the city says property taxes help pay for police, fire rescue, code compliance, road work, parks, recreation, senior transportation and other services residents use every day.

The key caveat: this is still a proposal, not a final change to Sunrise tax bills. The Florida Senate’s June 2 floor record shows the joint resolution, Save our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes, advancing in Tallahassee on the way to the ballot process.

That matters because municipal budgets depend on stable local revenue. Sunrise says if property-tax revenue falls, the city would have to review each program and decide whether to continue, reduce or eliminate it. The city also says lower property-tax revenue could mean higher fees, higher taxes on non-homesteaded properties and businesses, or special assessments.

Sunrise’s explainer puts a number on the risk: under the current proposal, the city says it could lose about $10 million in year one and $16 million in year two. Separate South Florida reporting has put statewide losses much higher, with CBS Miami reporting that local governments could lose nearly $12 billion annually within five years if voters approve the amendment.

For Broward taxpayers, the normal property-tax calendar still applies. The Broward County Property Appraiser says 2026 TRIM notices are mailed in mid-August, and 2026 value petitions are due Sept. 18. That schedule is separate from the state proposal, but it is the next reminder that property-tax decisions show up in real household planning, not just political messaging.

For Sunrise residents and businesses, the near-term question is how city officials translate the proposal into budget planning. The next things to watch are final ballot language, updated revenue estimates and whether Sunrise signals service changes in its 2026 budget discussions.
